Whole Book Downloads
We now provide more flexibility than ever before in allowing you to access information the way you want. If you want just a chapter, you can download a chapter. But now, for the first time ever, you can also download a whole book and take it with you.
Look for a "Download This Book" button in the Table of Contents section at the left, when you are reading a book. This button will display for any book that is available as a whole book download. Simply click the button to begin the download process.

in the Technical Books category, and half of the books in the General Books category, are available through Safari!
These include Beautiful Code, Head First SQL,
The Rails Way, and WPF Unleashed.
For the past 17 years, the Dr. Dobb's Jolt Product Excellence Awards have been presented annually to showcase products that have "jolted"

Nested SearchNow you can narrow your list of search results. The new Nested Search feature enables you to narrow the focus of a search progressively - by adding more specific terms to the query. We experimented with this feature on Safari Labs over the past year. Because we received many positive responses from subscribers, we have now added this powerful search feature to the full site. |

Safari Short CutsImportant new topics are not always book-length. The new Short Cuts format
answers your need for fast-breaking information or highly focused topics.
Short Cuts are an example of electronic publishing at its best: the latest
information or the most specialized topic, in a concise and focused format.
Short Cuts, as their name suggests, are briefer than books, but they come
from publishers you know and trust. A Short Cuts title is a complete treatment
of specific or very timely topic, usually in under 100 pages. Short Cuts are
included in Safari Library subscriptions. For Safari Bookshelf subscribers,
most Short Cuts take up just half of a bookshelf slot. If you want to download a Short Cuts title, the whole Short Cut will be a single PDF.

Certain books that are page layout-intensive can be viewed in the new Print
Fidelity view on Safari. The Print Fidelity view presents the books with the
same page layout found in the printed book. And now, when you download a PDF
of a chapter (or a complete Short Cut title) of a book that is available in
Print Fidelity view, the PDF will look the same as the Print Fidelity view
you see on your screen.

Print Fidelity or HTML? Choose Your Viewing Mode
 |
|
We've added a new "Print Fidelity" capability
to serving content.
These buttons, now available for a growing number of titles,
allow you to choose either Print Fidelity view
or HTML view as
your preferred reading mode.
Just the click of a button toggles between views for
certain books that are offered in Print Fidelity view
because they are page layout-intensive.
Check out the list of Print
Fidelity books and

what you think.

Page Turning Made Easy
Now you can turn pages without scrolling to the top or
bottom of the page. Simply click the gray borders along either
side margin to flip instantly from page to page.
|
Improved PDF Readability and Downloading
When you download chapters in PDF, you will notice a number
of layout and formatting improvements.
You will see improved font choices and larger font sizes.
More of the page is devoted to the text you want to read,
while headers and footers are more concise.
Effective use of white space on the page makes the PDFs
more readable.
Finally, downloading chapters now goes more quickly.
|
Rough Cuts Online Access
Safari Library subscribers can now view all Rough Cuts
titles online.
PDF downloads and significantly discounted print books will
remain a separate purchase.
Safari Library Promo users can see Preview versions of all
Rough Cuts titles online and can purchase

Additional Safari Features |
Longer Page Views for Book Content
We've slimmed down the top margin so that more space is devoted to content,
with less scrolling required. There are also many cases where we've increased
the amount of content that appears in a single page view. Content such as
chapter introductions and the first section has been combined to appear in
one page view instead of two.
Faster Page Refresh
Using Ajax, Safari serves pages faster and more efficiently,
giving priority to core page components that need to be refreshed first.
For example, when you click on the "Previous" or "Next" buttons inside a book,
you should notice that the core book content arrives prior to anything
else.
|
Choices on Log-in
You get to choose where you go after you log in, including going back
to the last page you were reading.
|
Suggested Search
As you type your search terms Safari will suggest, in real time,
expressions from the most popular searches our users have entered.
|
Convenient Access to Advanced Search Parameters
A new dropdown provides access to filtering on book titles, section titles,
code fragments, author, ISBN and publisher.
|
Front-matter Content Freely Viewable
Front-matter content, such as the preface and introduction, is now freely
viewable, whether or not the book is on your bookshelf.
|
More Contextual Preview from Search
In search results, if you are in "view-by-section" mode,
we provide a more contextual navigation from the search snippet to its
associated content. If the book isn't yet on your bookshelf, there is
a one-to-one linkage between text seen in the snippet and the preview
inside the book. Instead of going to the top few paragraphs of the section,
we'll take you to the same content seen in the snippet. The preview has also
been expanded to show more content.
|
Improvements to "Additional Reading" links
When you click on an "Additional reading" link (found at the bottom of book
content pages), the destination section is now viewable in full. You no
longer get only the limited preview if the book isn't on your bookshelf.
In addition, the links no longer reference the same book you're currently
reading, and you can even turn the additional reading block off and on.
